Geoff Vining is Professor of Statistics at Virginia Tech. He is the immediate past department head (from 1999-2006). He holds a B.A. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (1981), and a M.S. (1986) and Ph.D. (1988) from Virginia Tech. His primary areas of interest are experimental designs and their analysis for quality improvement, response surface methodology, statistical process control, and regression. From 1988-1999 he served on the faculty of the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida.

Dr. Vining has significant consulting experience in industry. He has received research grants from Alcoa, Shell, Becton Dickinson, Pratt & Whitney, NASA, and the US Air Force. Prior to going to graduate school, he was a Process Engineer with the Faber-Castell Corp. His responsibilities included technical support to the pencil lead operation and the development of a company wide Deming based quality improvement program.

Dr. Vining has authored or co-authored three books, all with multiple editions. He was the Editor of the Journal of Quality Technology from 1998-2000 and the Editor-in-Chief of Quality Engineering from 2008-2010. He has received numerous awards including the 2010 Shewhart Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ), which is the society’s top award for technical leadership, the 2010 William G. Hunter Award from the ASQ Statistics Division, which is another career award, the 1990 Brumbaugh Award from the ASQ for the paper published in an ASQ journal that made the greatest contribution to quality control. And the 2005 Lloyd Nelson Award from the Statistics Division of the ASQ for the paper published in the Journal of Quality Technology that made the greatest immediate impact for practitioners. He has been elected a Fellow of both the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the ASQ , has been elected a member of the International Statistics Institute and was elected an Academician of the International Academy for Quality. He has been Chair of the Quality and Productivity Section of the ASA and Chair of the Statistics Division of the ASQ. He was the Chair of the ASQ Publications Management Board from 2003-2007 and Co-Chair from 2007-Present. He recently was elected to represent the divisions on the ASQ Board of Directors for the period 2012-2013. In addition, he will serve as the Vice-Chair of the Division Affairs Council in 2012.
