Abstract: The improvement of business processes through learning and investigating workarounds has attracted research attention in recent years. Workarounds can be considered as a symptom of needed process improvements but adopting them does not necessarily lead to an appropriate one. Hence, identifying and understanding the underlying problems or perceived barriers that motivate workarounds is essential for suggesting an appropriate process improvement solution. In order to accomplish this, we propose the workaround driven improvement cycle (WDIC), which is a streamlined end-to-end process improvement cycle, from detecting and analyzing workaround and misalignment situations to the proposal of tailored process improvements. This approach is based on several pillars: (1) workarounds detection using a goal-based oriented approach that focuses on misalignment detection between three levels of goals, and technics of Process Mining (PM) for quantification of the detected workarounds. (2) workarounds investigation and analysis in two levels, misalignment-oriented analysis using the goal-based analysis approach, and motivational analysis using the TPB-based model to analyze situations from the individual’s perception. And (3) proposal of tailored and focused process improvements using a workaround-based improvement framework that is based on goals misalignment and improvement categories.
