Xavier TORT MARTORELL is Professor of Industrial Statistics and Quality at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Barcelona TECH (UPC). He is the immediate past department head (from 2002-2012) and develops his teaching, research and consulting activities at the Barcelona Industrial Engineering School of which he has been vice-dean (1997-2002). He holds a B.A. (1977) and a Ph.D. (1986) form UPC and an M.S. (1983) from University of Wisconsin-Madison. His primary areas of interest are quality improvement, six sigma, experimental design, and quality management. From 1986 to 1992 he combined his university activities with professional ones in two consulting firms, SISTECAL and Roland Berger and Partner as manager of the quality activities in Spain.Dr. Tort-Martorell is co-founder of the Centre for Quality and Productivity Improvement of Catalunya. He has been president (2011-2013) of ENBIS (European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics), assessor of the European Quality Award (1992 and 1993) and has been member of the Jury of the Catalan Quality Price (1993-2002). He was member of the team that revised the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) Excellence Model in 2003. He has been the Director of the MBA in TQM organized by UPC in Barcelona (1992-2012), Lisbon (2002-2007) and Santiago de Chile (2007-actuality) as part of a MBA in Integrated Management. He is the founder and director of the UPC Six Sigma postgraduate program that is running since 2001 in Barcelona and has run editions in Bilbao and Santiago de Chile.Dr. Tort-Martorell is co-author of four books and member of the editorial board of Total Quality Management and Business Excellence, Quality Technology and Quality Management and the International Journal of Quality and Service Sciences. In addition he has a long consulting experience in quality management, quality and statistical techniques and Six Sigma, among other companies he has worked for: Gallina Blanca Purina, Nissan, HP, Ajuntament d’Esplugues, Ultramar Express (group TUI), Samsung Electronics, Alstom Transport, Chep, Zanini, Braun, Pius Hospital, BBVA, ITP (Rolls Royce group), Selbytel and Siemens VDO.
