Galit Shmueli

Galit Shmueli is Distinguished Professor at the Institute of Service Science, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Taiwan. She is also Director of the Center for Service Innovation & Analytics at NTHU’s College of Technology Management. Dr. Shmueli’s research focuses on statistical and data mining methodology with applications in information systems and healthcare. She received her MSc and PhD from the Technion’s Industrial Engineering & Management Faculty in 2000. Her PhD on “Run-Related Distributions and their Application to Industrial Statistics” later led to creating the widely used website www.sqconline.com (Online Statistical Calculators for Acceptance Sampling and Quality Control).

From 2000-2002, Dr. Shmueli was Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Statistics Department, where she was involved in biosurveillance research. Her co-authored 2010 paper “Statistical Challenges Facing Early Outbreak Detection in Biosurveillance” was the featured article in Technometrics. In 2002-2012 Prof. Shmueli was faculty at University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business, and later at the Indian School of Business in India, and NTHU in Taiwan, where she’s focused and collaborated on research on the interface of Information Systems and designed and instructed Business Analytics courses. Dr. Shmueli has written multiple textbooks including the popular Data Mining for Business Analytics. She won multiple research and teaching awards, including the 2012 ENBIS Greenfield Challenge. Dr. Shmueli has recently focused attention to the emergence of behavioral big data into quality and engineering research & practice. She’s introduced the topic at keynote addresses at the 2016 Stu Hunter Research Conference, IEEE BigData Congress in Taipei, and the Israeli Conference on Mechanical Engineering at the Technion, and in two journal papers in Quality Engineering and in Big Data.
